The magic is in the details

When it comes to wedding photography, the little things often leave the biggest impression. That’s why wedding flat lays—those beautifully styled images of your day’s smallest details—are essential. Why you ask? Because these meticulously crafted images capture the essence of your theme, style, and love story

Why Wedding Flat Lay Details Are Important?

Imagine flipping through your wedding album years from now. Each flat lay tells a story, a mini-narrative woven with the threads of your chosen theme, colors, and cherished items. These photos are not just pretty—they're a visual diary capturing the essence of your day!

Gather the Essentials Early

Preparation is key! A month before the big day, create a checklist of all the items that hold sentimental value.  Flat lays only work if you have the right details ready. Include items like:

  • Invitation suite
  • Rings
  • Vow books
  • Jewelry
  • Perfume
  • Shoes
  • Fabric swatches or ribbon
  • Earrings
  • Bracelets
  • Small family heirlooms, such as pearls, rings, cufflinks, tie clips, etc.

Tip: Pack a "details box" in advance and hand it to your photographer first thing. Add meaningful extras like heirloom pieces or personalized charms.

Example: Emily included satin flowers from her grandmother’s wedding bouquet—adding sentiment to her flat lay.

Work with Your Photographer

Time matters! Allocate at least 30–45 minutes for flat lay photography before getting dressed. This ensures your photographer can style and shoot without rush.

Tip: Schedule flat lays as part of your morning timeline.

Example: Emily and Connor scheduled 45 mins. for their flay lay detail photos. This allowed me to capture every element of their rustic elegance wedding theme.

Collaborate on Layers and Textures

Flat lay styling thrives on contrast, composition, and creativity—and your photographer is your best partner in bringing it all together. They know how to layer elements for visual impact, so don’t hesitate to collaborate!

Work together to combine:

  • Matte and shiny finishes (like wax seals with metallic rings)
  • Soft fabrics with hard metals (think velvet ribbon under your jewelry)
  • Florals or greenery for added depth and softness

Tip: Ask your florist for a few extra blooms, petals, or greenery snippets. Your photographer can style these around your flat lays to tie everything back to your wedding theme.

Example: Emily and Connor included a beautiful velvet green ring box in addition to a hand-crafted ring box made by Connor. Also , from my detail kit, I included cream ceramic and gold metallic vintage ring dishes to elevate and contrast the ring boxes. Extra florals matching Emily’s bouquet were used to add depth to the overall flat lay. The result? A beautifully styled layout that felt romantic, fit their wedding theme, and was perfectly cohesive.

Personalize Your Story

The best wedding flat lays are personal. Include items that reflect you—a love letter, cultural memento, or custom wax seal.

Tip: Coordinate details with your wedding color palette.

Example: Emily and Connor’s style and theme was based off of a rustic elegance with a beautiful green palette and pops of purple and cream. Since Connor proposed to Emily in Cooper’s Rock State Park, they included handmade wooden place card holders to symbolize their engagement story. Also included was a special surprise from Connor to Emily: a sketch of a tulip similar to one of Emily’s tattoo. For the week leading up to the wedding, Connor had been leaving 6 identical sketches for Emily to find, with the last one delivered on the wedding day.
